The Alliance for Permanent Access

Digital technology nowadays touches upon almost every aspect of our daily lives. This dependence is particularly critical in our professional activities where the management of digital information is central to the digital economy and emerging knowledge society. In scholarly communications particularly, digital data and information play a central role. Scientific advancement is unimaginable without easy and ubiquitous access to the digital scientific record.

The Alliance for Permanent Access brings together a number of major European research laboratories, research funders, and research support organisations such as national libraries and publishers, to create a shared vision and framework for a sustainable digital information infrastructure providing permanent access to scientific information.

The mission

The mission of APA is to enable permanent access to scholarly information – that is to the digital store of research data, information and knowledge.
Digital preservation is too big an issue for individual institutions, sectors, disciplines or even countries to address on their own, for the research itself has become an international enterprise. To deal with the challenge, European as well as global collaboration is needed involving all stakeholders from different communities.

What we do

APA concentrates its activities on the most pressing issues relevant to the creation of a sustainable science data e-infrastructure. The focus is on preservation and permanent access and (re-)use. The major activities are:

  • Aligning and enhancing permanent information infrastructures in Europe
  • Networking and building partnerships with relevant stakeholders
  • Joint advocacy and representation
  • Increasing impact and achieving critical-mass
